Its
the highest waterfall in the world, with 1005 meters
(3297 ft) high from the top of the Auyantepui (the
largest of the spectacular flat-tooped mesas of
ancient stone in the Gran Sabana, covering an area
of 700 sq. Km.), 2580 meters (8465 ft) above sea
level. In that region live the indian tribe of
Kamaratas, and at 10 Km. away from the foot of the
Salto Angel you'll find the indian settlement of
Uruyén. This waterfall is located in the Canaima
National Park, in the Bolívar state.
The American pilot Jimmie Angel (1899-1956) was in
the Auyantepui in 1937 in search of gold, and then
the Salto Angel was discovered by this American
pilot.
Obviously, Salto Angel is the main attraction, and
the major focus of the tour companies. As there are
no trails to the waterfall you have to take a tour,
either by plane or boat. Flights to the waterfall
are serviced by light planes of various small
airlines which come to Canaima, mostly from Ciudad
Bolívar. The pilots fly two or three times back and
forth over the face of the falls, circle the top of
the tepui and then return. The boat excursion to
Salto Angel is a memorable experience -arguably even
more fascinating than the flight- which allows you
to see the waterfall from a different perspective,
and more importantly, to enjoy it at a more
leisurely pace. Motorised canoes only operate in the
rainy season, usually from June to December or
January.
