At
the Peninsula of Paria there are forests with tall
trees that rise above a thick vegetation; wide
plains which remain flooded most of the year,
housing a very special fauna, and the most
spectacular beaches, surrounded by mountains and
lush palm trees. It covers an area of 37,500
hectares and was declared national park in 1978.
It is located on the north-eastern region of
Venezuela, in the State of Sucre, and stretches from
the city of Carúpano to the Caribbean pass called
Bocas de Dragón, across from the island of Trinidad.
A region rich in natural resources, it served to
strengthen Venezuelan wealth during colonial times
with its vast acknowledged world wide. Today its
beaches, ranked among the best ones in the country,
offer themselves exclusively to those looking for a
place to relax and have fun. Here, the people
developed farming, crafting and braiding palm leaves.
Joyful and kind, they celebrate traditional
festivities with folkloric songs and "galerones" in
which each singer improvises amusing lyrics,
generously mixed with rum (liquor).
Playa Medina is one of the most beautiful beaches in
the Caribbean. A strip of fine sand separates the
sea from a wide area covered with vegetation,
nesting place of countless bird species. This beach
is characterized by its fresh, calmed waters,
protected by a cove, where visitors can scuba dive
and explore the rocky bottom or the corals near by.
Right there is the Hotel Medina, with eight cottages
and a restaurant with excellent service.
On
the northern side we find Mapurite, another beach
with calmed waters, that can only be accessed by
sea, and which offers the bonus attraction of being
a place for turtle nesting. Medinita is a small
beach, on the southern side of Medina, that offers
solitude to those couples willing to explore it.
Other famous beaches around the region are Pui-Pui
and Chaguarama. Long and wide, their waters are just
right for those who like to practice surfing. In the
latter, camps can be set, and barbecues can be
cooked at the specially designated places; campers
may also go for a horse back ride along the beach,
or enjoy the typical "empanadas" -cornmeal pies
stuffed with cheese, meat or fish- sold by the
ladies who walk barefooted on the sand.
Corpomedina organizes a complete tour around the
Paria Peninsula, including accommodations and all
meals at Playa Medina, a visit to the Hato
Agro-ecológico Agua Santa, th the ÑO Carlos farm,
where you may enjoy the hot springs, and to a cocoa
hacienda; transportation Carúpano-Playa
Medina-Carúpano; beach and linen service; and all
national drinks.
