The
Morrocoy National Park is located in the Falcón
state. It is one of the country's principal coastal
tourist destinations. Morrocoy is one of the most
spectacular littoral environments on Venezuela's
coast.
Morrocoy national park comprises a strip of the
coast and the offshore area dotted with islands,
islets and cays, many islands skirted with white-sand
beaches and surrounded by coral reefs. The waters
around the islands offer marvelous opportunities for
snorkeling, diving, windsurf, etc.
The park is a popular destinations for the
Venezuelan tourists, who come in masse on holidays
and weekends. Maybe, the fragile island environment
is beginning to suffer from human interference.
This
park is located between the towns of Tucacas and
Chichiriviche, which are its main gateways. Both
these towns have well organised boat services to the
islands, as well as an array of places to stay and
eat. The tourists can use then as a springboard for
day trips to the islands.
The most popular of the islands is Cayo Sombrero,
which has fine coral reefs and some of the best
beaches. Other places good for snorkeling include
Cayo Borracho, Cayo Peraza, Playa Mero y Playuela.
The park is also well known for its variety of
wading and water birds including ibis, pelicans,
flamingos, ducks, etc. They inhabit, either
permanently or seasonally, some of the islands and
coastal mangroves, especially the Golfete de Cuare,
which has been declared a wildlife refuge.
