This
national park is located in the isthmus connecting
Coro and La Vela de Coro to the Península de
Paraguaná, in the State of Falcón. Located on the
road to Punto Fijo. You can reach the Médanos de
Coro by taking the road Barquisimeto-Churuguara-Coro;
by the via Morón-Coro or the via Maracaibo-Coro.
The main attraction of the park are the médanos,
dune and salt marsher, which give the impression of
being in the middle of the Sahara Desert. It covers
an area of 91,280 hectares and was declared national
park in 1971. The istmo de los Médanos (Medanos
isthmus) stands out from the complete landscape of
the zone. It is a stretch 34 Km. long and 5 Km. wide
with an average altitude of 20 meters (66 feet)
above sea level.
Here,
the most interesting show for the tourist is to see
how the sand begins to change place and this sand
forms capricious arabesque under the sun.
Many people go to this park, beyond the eco-tourist
intentions, in order to healing several types of
muscular pains with the use of the heat accumulated
in these dunes. Here there are not facilities for
the tourism. Some people go to the Médanos de Coro
when they go to other near destinations as the city
of Coro. This city was declared
Historical Patrimony of the
Humanity for the
UNESCO.
In
the dunes, the vegetation is scarce. There are not
more than 60 flora species, mainly the tunas,
cardones and cactus. The wild fauna is also scarce.
This fauna include reptiles, lizards, iguanas, the
partridge, the turpial, the cardinal coriano, bats,
the rabbit and the fox among others.
We recommend you to visit to the Médanos de Coro
like an alternative destination when you travels to
the State of Falcón. And if you have a muscular pain
or if you thinks that the heat of the sand of these
dunes can be beneficial for its health, take
advantage of this visit.
